About Us
How we got started. My grandmother, we all called her Granny, was a great one for home remedies. She told me that her recipes came from her mother who, after immigrating here in 1904, realized that many of the plants that grew wild here were very similar to the ones she knew from home. There were no runs to the doctor’s office or the emergency room for cuts, burns, or bruises. You “made do”. As every generation does, I thought newer was better. Why would I spend my time brewing up a salve for cuts or blisters when there was great stuff available at the drug store, and everybody knows that all you need for burns is an aloe plant. I don’t know about you, but I find carrying an aloe plant in my purse kind of inconvenient. I also started hearing about how we are building up such high tolerances to antibiotics that they don’t always work when we need them. Believe me, I am in favor of antibiotics, if I’m sick, give me all I need, but I want them to be able to work, so I decided to do a little research into what Gran used to cook up in her kitchen. What I read made sense. I’ve made a lot of “adjustments” to her recipes, I am not, under any circumstances, going to smear lard on myself, but sunflower oil with a little beeswax works very nicely as a carrier for my basic salves and balms, not to mention has a better smell. I remember my when my cousin had her first baby, Gran’s first great-grandchild ,and Gran tried to smear her comfrey salve on the little darling’s butt! My cousin had a fit. Then the princess got a raging case of diaper rash and she came running to Gran for some “stuff”. We all have to learn the hard way. I’ve carried a little jar of comfrey salve in my purse for as long as I can remember. Co-workers have used it for everything from burns to paper cuts, always telling me I should sell the stuff—so I am. I will be adding few more offerings than I used to, they are all moderately priced and sensibly packaged. I’m sure that once you have tried Ozark Remedies you’ll love them.
